The Beginning

Creative Animal Rescue and Art Education Center is a startup non profit. We are in the beginning stages of learning how to successfully achieve our dream. The dream being to ultimately open a sanctuary for animals, as well as a camp for children. The idea behind the rescue is to nurture responsibility and empathy in young people through caring for animals and through art education. We believe that art and rescue work can help our younger generations to grow into productive, responsible and loving citizens. Our first step toward this dream is to attend the "How to start a Sanctuary Workshop" at Best Friends Animal Society. We will begin raising money for this adventure as soon as we receive our EIN number from the State of Missouri.

The reasons we have started this blog are many; to educate the public on animal awareness as well as how this awareness, combined with art can help change our society; to gain public support for our cause; and finally to document every step of beginning a rescue with very high ambitions. This document will serve as a blueprint for others who would like to start their own rescue. We will document the obstacles and the achievements. We would love to hear your feedback on what we are doing. We are open to suggestions and advice. And last but not least, we are so excited to get to know all of you.

I Googled "arts center animal rescue" because for years I have been thinking about working for and/or opening up just such a place. I'm not ready financially or otherwise to open up my own place at this time so I was looking to see what's out there. I went to art school and have been working in the arts and volunteering with at-risk youth and with animal rescue services for years, and also stopped eating meat and buying animal tested products in high school.
I came back from West Africa in September. where I was a Peace Corps Volunteer. While there, I had a few other career ideas (global public health, etc) but I always come back to this kind of work. I do believe there are many various careers for all of us that would make us happy but the options make the decision complicated.
Animal husbandry is much needed in developing countries as well as here. The animal (horses, donkeys, etc) are still used to pull plows and pull water from wells, pull carts full of people, etc but are treated as tools, given no affection or consideration of having a heart. What people need is an education. I tried to convince the people I knew in Africa that they'd get more out of their animals if their animals got more out of them - better treatment.
Good luck to you. I would love to help in person but I'm in Brooklyn, NY. Maybe we can bounce ideas off of each other. My email is donnalopp@yahoo.com.
Take care, Donna
PS- I love your jewelry
